Male Gatekeepers: Gender Bias in the Publishing Process?

Using data on articles published in the top-five economics journals period 1991 to 2018, we explore whether gender composition of editorial boards is related publishing success female authors and quality that get published. Our results show a low level representation women harms authors, while higher increases share are (co-)authored by women. We also find evidence editors benefit article quality. While number unique our sample rather small (a dozen), several robustness checks corroborate these findings, which direct relevance for equity efficiency academic process. findings broadly consistent with existing behavior gender-mixed hiring committees.
